Media’s performance of showing stereotypes

Wednesday, 13 July 2011

Nowadays media stereotypes are very well-known among diverse curriculum .Media stereotypes are usual things in advertisement, TV, magazines and films or movies, where audience can swiftly comprehend the information. Either we can say media stereotypes give some clue that is easier for audience to recognizing about a personality or group of people like concerning their gender, race, image, profession, social position etc. media stereotype can be presented in a different ways such as an appearance, behavior, real or imaginary normal behavior.

If we talk about any magazines or advertisements, what thing comes on our mind first?  Obviously it will be women. We see in magazines or advertisements are full of images of women and girls who are naturally skinny, white and wearing sexy dresses and it is the easiest way to attract the people for selling the products. Because everyone knows that women are the most gorgeous and influential to sell the products. That’s why media always try to portray these kinds of sexual appearances for their own benefits.

It is not only used in magazines but also used in Hollywood movies, where we have seen these sorts of stereotypical images. The media such as movies and some TV serials are always shown African Americans as an underprivileged, lower class and those who are living in a rural area engaged with some types of crimes, which shows stereotyping minority about this country. In Disney animated movies, we had seen racial stereotypes and one of the example is “THE JUNGLE BOOK ‘’ (1960) where it portrays that the gorillas and orangutans were sound like black people. Some of the existing Disney movies also have racial and gender stereotyping for instance Aladdin, peter pan, the lion king, Tarzan, beauty and the beast etc.

Since September 11th incident, Muslims especially Arabs are seen to be terrorist. For example:  the video of reel bad Arabs and some other movies if there is any scene of plane hijacking or bomb blasting, Arabs are shown as a hijacker or terrorist. In lots of movies I had seen this type of stereotypical scene which influences audience to assume Muslims as a terrorist.

So therefore, i would like to say that before accepting ideal depicts that media stereotypes represent, we need to know about the real truth.

I totally agree with Jinat, this is actually the magic of media. It can create any stereotype about cretin ethic or belief and deliver a wrong picture about them. That's why they say "Media is a war among communities.
